Humberside Fire and Rescue Service has achieved menopause-friendly accreditation by improving its workplace environment so staff have a greater understanding about it.
The fire service operates across East Riding of Yorkshire, Kingston upon Hull, north Lincolnshire and north east Lincolnshire. To achieve menopause-friendly accreditation, which was established by Henpicked: Menopause In The Workplace, the service had to demonstrate its effectiveness in culture, policies and practices, training, engagement and working environment.
It was recognised due to its menopause policy that sets out guidance for employees to support their journey through both perimenopause and the menopause, and its creation of a menopause networking group in 2023 which acted as a key driver for accreditation.
It also hosted a health and wellbeing event and menopause awareness workshops, engaged staff in women’s health topics, and aligned action to International Women’s Day.
Through its occupational health and wellbeing team’s positive, proactive and forward-thinking approach to the menopause, the service engaged staff of all genders to work towards the accreditation, breaking the stigma and facilitating more conversations about menopause.
Jordan Kerman, head of occupational health and wellbeing at Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We have worked hard to develop a positive culture around menopause by listening to our staff to understand the needs of our people and how this relates to their working environment. Our staff have demanding and responsible roles, and we view creating an inclusive workplace not just as a duty, but as an opportunity to support their wellbeing and foster a supportive environment.
“The single most important area we addressed was to have an open and honest approach to menopause starting with our workshops and awareness events. Our staff reported feeling valued and supported by their peers which has created a more inclusive workplace. This is a major milestone and we remain committed to continuing our growth as an inclusive organisation where all employees of the service feel confident and comfortable at work.”
