London headquartered global financial services group Nomura has received menopause-friendly accreditation.
To achieve the accreditation, which was established by Henpicked: Menopause In The Workplace, Nomura had to demonstrate effectiveness in culture, policies and practices, training, engagement and working environment.
The employer implemented a full training programme and made adjustments to policies and practices. It invested in its onsite GP to gain a menopause qualification to provide dedicated appointments and referrals, so employees can book a same day appointment without having to wait for an NHS one or take time out of work.
Nomura also has a qualified nutritional therapist onsite each week for discussions in relation to the menopause, and annual managing menopause at work training for all employees and line managers. It has shared comprehensive resources and populated its intranet with information.
By creating physical and virtual safe spaces, Nomura has lifted barriers to inclusion and equity within the workplace. It has seen reduced absence due to menopause symptoms through occupational health support, higher engagement in onsite services, and employees feeling able to talk openly.
Kirsty McLean, wellbeing programme director at Nomura, said: “We want employees to feel safe talking to their line manager about menopause and ensure everyone knows how to access support. We also want line managers to feel equipped in supporting teams thus creating a healthy workplace culture where everyone can thrive. We created a menopause support hub within the mental and physical wellbeing pillars on our intranet to bring all menopause support into one place. The hub signposts people to our menopause champions whose support is based on their additional training and development which is ongoing.”
John Goff, global head of structuring and executive sponsor of the gender balance network at Nomura, added: “We want everyone to feel valued, respected and empowered in the workplace, regardless of their stage of life. Given the impact menopause can have on people’s lives, both at work and at home, we believe it’s our responsibility to ensure everyone across our business feels comfortable and supported during this journey.”
