Global specialty reinsurer Canopius has appointed Lucy Bennett as its new head of equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) with immediate effect.

Reporting to Ceri Royal, head of HR, business partnering and organisational development, Bennett’s new role will involve having responsibility for elevating Canopius’ EDI programme as it works towards the goals set out in its action plan.

She will also manage Canopius’ relationships with a panel of members’ bodies and charities that represent and support different societal groups, including the Business Disability Forum, in order to broaden the specialist network of advisers that help to shape the firm’s continued EDI progression.

Joining from Surrey Police, where she served as head of diversity and inclusion and was responsible for its delivery of its EDI strategy, Bennett worked with a range of stakeholders and cross-functionally with the police force to ensure inclusion and diversity were central to decision making. She also developed its response to the Police Race Action Plan.

Prior to this, Bennett worked at Moving Ahead, a social impact organisation specialising in improving workplace diversity and inclusion.

Bennett said: “I have been immensely impressed by Canopius’ commitment to EDI. It is tangible at every level of the business, and I am looking forward to supporting colleagues globally to do even more and to set a new standard for inclusivity and belonging in the workplace across our international office network.”

Royal added: “Lucy has been appointed to strengthen Canopius’ approach to EDI across all our international teams and businesses. This is a global role and a statement of intent of our commitment to consistently improve and embed a culture that ensures that every one of our team members can bring their whole selves to work certain of a wholly welcoming culture in which they can thrive.”
