
Something for the weekend: Have you ever wanted to live in an 18th century mansion? Then this is your lucky day, as a role for a live-in houseperson at Holkham Hall in Norfolk is now open to applications!
The privately-owned estate which extends over 25,000 acres, includes residential and commercial lettings, property development, arable and vegetable farming, forestry, country sports, an inn, a holiday park, beaches, car parks, admissions, cafes, shops, concerts, and events.
The role of houseperson would see the successful candidate live in a one-bedroom flat inside the hall itself for two days a week to ensure the hall is safe and secure, providing security cover in accordance with a three-month rota, as well as ad-hoc 24-hour security cover and emergency response shifts.
Reporting to the facilities and security manager, the houseperson would be required to ensure the hall is always presented and maintained to a high standard, open and close the hall while ensuring routes are clear and alarms are secured, maintain secure access to the hall and surrounding buildings, complete compliance jobs, such as play area checks, fire alarm tests, biomass check and rooftop inspections, and undertake routine repairs and maintenance of the site services and buildings.
They will also be required to respond to requests from the family, which may involve driving duties, movement of luggage, assisting with family dogs, fire laying, movement of furniture, and repairs, assist with the deliveries of equipment, stock, materials, or large parcels, assist with general maintenance and upkeep of family and enterprises vehicles, help with projects such as weddings and events, filming, tours, VIP visits, and family social gatherings, and carry out all duties in compliance with health and safety at work legislation and risk assessments.
The successful applicant will be discreet, trustworthy, a team player and enjoy working outside. They will also have initiative, energy and a positive attitude, attention to detail, flexibility, an ability to work calmly under pressure, and excellent customer service skills. A full UK driving licence and an in-date DBS will be required.
The advert stated: “This is a hands-on role which will require a flexible and practical approach. Turning a practical hand to all manner of maintenance jobs while keeping on top of mandatory compliance tasks to ensure that the building runs smoothly for visitors, family and staff.
