Employees England

Something for the weekend: The England men’s football team has reached the final of the UEFA European Football Championship (Euros) 2024, with the match against Spain due to take place on Sunday 14 July at 8pm.

As supporters across the country prepare for football to potentially come home, gambling website Betway conducted a survey with 2,128 England football fans aged 18 and above to find out whether they are likely to turn up to work late or not at all on Monday morning.

The findings revealed that British employee respondents aged 35-44 were most likely to pull a sickie or arrive to work late on Monday morning due to the England game, with more than half (54%) admitting they would do so.

Half (51%) of those aged 25-34 answered that they will skip work on Monday following the match, along with 46% of those aged 18-24 and 43% of those aged 45-54. Employees aged 55 and above were the least inclined to skip work, with just 24% considering this.

Football fans in Southampton were found to be the most likely to not go to work because of the match, with 52% admitting they would do so. They were followed by fans in Manchester (48%) and Nottingham (47%), while Norwich fans were least likely to skip work, with only 28% considering it.

A Betway spokesperson said: “Countless fans across the nation are rallying together in support of England in the Euros. In fact, nearly a quarter of fans said they actually won’t go on holiday this year because of the tournament. We wanted to see how fans are planning on getting behind the team by surveying more than 2,000 England fans.”

We at Employee Benefits imagine that if England win the match this weekend, employers may receive a fair few employees calling in sick!
