TransPennine Express (TPE) is holding a Mental Health Awareness Week (27 April to 3 May) for its more than 1,900 employees.

This year, the train operator will focus on ‘Move for your Mind’, which explores the positive role that movement, exercise and connection can play in reducing stress, improving mood and supporting overall wellbeing.

As part of the week, the organisation has invited the public to join employees in free dance sessions. The first of these took place at Manchester Airport station on Tuesday 28 April at 12pm, and a Zumba class at Huddersfield station will take place on Thursday 30 April at 12pm. Both events are open to the public.

The wellbeing activity forms part of TPE’s wider commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive workplace, while engaging with the communities it serves.

It is also part of its aim to help employees adopt healthy habits that support long-term wellbeing and promote how movement and physical activity can boost mental health.

Nicola Buckley, people director at TPE, said: “Looking after our mental health doesn’t have to start with big steps; it can begin with something as simple as getting up and moving. Through these events, we want to bring people together, break down stigma and make it easier for employees and the public to talk openly and access support whenever they need it.”

TPE also offers staff a 24/7 employee assistance programme with confidential mental health, financial and practical support for employees and their families, a mental health guide to offer signposting and advice for anyone experiencing mental ill health, and trained mental health first aiders who provide wellbeing guidance and access to professional support where required.

It also introduced certified therapy dog Nya through its Pets as Therapy programme, who visits stations to offer comfort, reduce stress and encourage positive interaction among passengers and employees. In addition, the organisation launched Move Ambassadors to champion the role of physical activity in supporting mental wellbeing and helping employees feel valued and able to thrive.
