Retailer Currys has reported a -0.9% mean gender pay gap for 2024, down from 1.2% in 2023.

Its median gender pay gap has also decreased, falling from 5.1% in 2023 to 3.3%.

The organisation’s mean gender pay gap results from a significant portion of the business paying a standard hourly rate, while the median gender pay gap is influenced by a higher number of women in lower pay quartiles and more men in senior positions. Additionally, a large number of women choose to work in part-time roles.

Currys’ mean gender bonus gap for 2024 was 13.7%, compared to -0.8% in 2023, while its median gender bonus gap stood at 24.9%, up from 18% previously. Its mean adjusted full-time equivalent bonus gap was 8.1%, compared to -5.6% in 2024, while its median was 7.4%, versus -0.7% the year prior.

The increases were influenced by a special bonus programme introduced for retail managers during the peak trading period, where there are more male employees. In addition, a large number of the organisation#s female staff work part-time, particularly in its retail teams, where bonus opportunities are typically lower.

A total of 93.1% of women and 94.7% of men received a bonus last year, compared to 91.5% of women and 92.2% of men the previous year.

Paula Coughlan, chief people, communications and sustainability officer at Currys, said: “In the last 12 months, we’ve been developing the Currys People Promise, our commitment to enabling everyone to be successful by offering flexibility, support, and bags of opportunity to work in an amazing team. Living and breathing inclusion underpins this promise.

“Some of the things I am proudest of include giving more employees opportunities to share their views on inclusion and diversity by integrating our inclusion survey with our annual staff survey, reaching 1,800 employees through our cohort of four colleague networks, and building greater capability through our inclusive hiring, workplace adjustments and refreshed dignity at work training and policies. Others include increasing our profile externally as an employer of choice and exciting career destination for female talent, and seeing our efforts recognised externally.”
