Remote working: Top 5 tips to finding employment in 2021

2020 saw a massive shift into remote working. Now, more jobs than ever are carried out away from the office and at home. Here are 5 top tips for finding employment in 2021’s remote working climate.

  1. Do your research

Doing your research on the kind of company and sector you want to work for is a perfect start. Being stuck inside offers up free time to browse the internet for information on your chosen areas.

In doing so, you will find whether the job is a good fit for you (thinking about the roles and company ethics). It may even open up other opportunities or professions you had not contemplated.

  1. Improve your CV

The UK has been in lockdown on and off since the beginning of 2020. Without the ability to meet employers and more and more people are remote working. Your CV will most likely be what they see first. With an average of 5-7 seconds spent looking at CV’s, making a lasting impression is even more significant than ever in finding employment.

Your CV may not have been edited in some time and could require a spring clean. Make sure to include new skill sets you might have picked up over lockdown. Even if you have recently updated your CV, it is always important to check it and keep it fresh.

Creating a standard CV foundation to edit and cater to different job roles is an easy way to keep it current and relevant to the job you are applying for. Stay away from long documents, over-complicated themes, and spelling errors. A massive 88% of CVs that include your photo get rejected*, so bear that in mind.

  1. Use skills, learn new ones

Utilising your skills, not just your passions, is a vital part of remote working in 2021.

Transferable skills from University or previous employment can be exploited in your next role or help you find new ways of working.

Don’t leave your passions behind but always put your best foot forward. In Cal New Ports book So Good They Can’t Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love, he wrote: “If you want to love what you do, abandon the passion mindset (“what can the world offer me?”) and instead adopt the craftsman mindset (“what can I offer the world?”).”*

When you’re out of employment, learning a new skill can help keep you motivated and confident. With a plethora of online courses, learning skills online is now a much easier task and encourages remote working.

Developing a new skill can help you stand out from the crowd. According to The Independent, 4,228 people applied to an entry-level role in 2020. With other jobs receiving between 500 to 3,000 applications, it is even more important to show you have the required skills in 2021.*

  1. Hunt their social media

Following companies on social media can seem trivial. However, it allows you to stay up to date with their content giving you an insight into their strategies, products, or ethos (relating to tip number one). Following them on social accounts, such as LinkedIn, can even help them find you and shows your keenness and interest in their company, not just the role.

Being present on companies social media accounts will put you at the forefront of their mind when they start applying for new jobs if you were unsuccessful the first time around, whether that be remote working on the back within an office environment.

  1. Finally, don’t give up

Looking for a job especially when remote working isn’t always on your side can be tedious and often leave you feeling trapped. Throughout your job-hunting journey, you will find new ways of working, increasing your likelihood of success. So not giving up is the key to finding your perfect role. It will happen. We promise.
