Aldi is to further increase pay for its more than 28,000 hourly paid UK store employees as part of its commitment to never to be beaten on pay.

From Monday 1 September, thousands of Aldi’s hourly paid UK store staff will receive a pay rise to £13.02 an hour, with the rate rising to £13.95 depending on their length of service. The new rates for those based in London will rise from £14.05 an hour to £14.35, increasing to £14.66 with length of service.

This rise is higher than expected after Aldi announced plans in July to increase pay for store assistants from £12.75 an hour to £13 across the UK, and to £14.33 within the M25, from 1 September. Based on their length of service, this was originally due to rise further to £13.93 nationally, and £14.64 within the M25.

This followed the supermarket’s announcement in January that it would increase store assistant pay to at least £12.71 an hour nationally, and £14 within the M25, as of 1 March. This pay rise was based on employees’ length of service, and its salaried staff also benefitted from a pay increase.

Giles Hurley, chief executive officer of Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “Our employees are at the heart of our success, and we’re committed to ensuring they are fully rewarded for the outstanding work they do. This higher-than-planned pay rise is part of our promise to never be beaten on pay.”

Aldi offers all employees paid breaks worth approximately £1,425 a year for the average store worker, 28 days’ annual leave, a health cash plan, discounted gym membership, discounted cinema tickets and holidays, sick pay, long-service awards, maternity, paternity and adoption leave, an online wellness portal, an employee assistance programme, and training and learning development opportunities.
