Nik Butcher (pictured), total rewards manager, Europe, Middle East and Africa at Kao Group will speak at Employee Benefits Live on 25 September about communicating with a diverse workforce.
Employee Benefits asked him a few key questions.
1. What has been your biggest challenge in 2013?
The biggest challenge this year has been getting ready for auto-enrolment. Not just the actual event, but getting the communications right so that all staff understand what it is and why it’s a good thing for them.
2. What issues or challenges is the industry currently facing?
More and more pressure on budgets means more emphasis on showing a return on investment and making sure that each benefit is used to its maximum potential.
3. What are the most important messages for people to take away from your session?
Don’t get stuck in the ‘normal’ ideas of diversity and how you should communicate to staff. Nobody employs stereotypes.
4. What’s the next trend or hot topic we can expect to see around your topic?
A rise in the back-to-basics approach with more emphasis on face-to-face communications. People do not just work for the money and we need to realise that we need to treat people ‘right’ or we will lose them.
5. What do you most enjoy about your job?
The idea that I can make a difference to even some of our staff and that they will be better off for it, both financially and personally. Even if they just feel appreciated because someone thanked them for doing a good job. It all helps increase their engagement and company loyalty.
