Stockport-NHS

Stockport NHS Foundation Trust has been accredited as a menopause-friendly employer, in recognition of the support it offers to its staff.

The accreditation, awarded by Henpicked: Menopause in the Workplace, recognises the high standards and practices implemented by employers to support staff experiencing menopause.

In achieving the recognition, the trust, which runs hospital services at Stepping Hill Hospital and community NHS services, demonstrated that it has met high standards in support around culture, policies and practices, training, engagement and the working environment.

These support actions include establishing a specialist menopause clinic for staff members; introducing a Facebook group and café to encourage openness and discussions on menopause; and having the backing of the trust board and introducing other measures such as optional lighter uniforms.

Sara Wilson, head of staff wellbeing and occupational health at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, said: “A key aspect of our approach was to introduce a menopause clinic. This took a good deal of time, organisation and effort but we fervently believe it is worth it. It is having a really beneficial impact on workforce retention levels, productivity, absenteeism and, very importantly, patient care.

“Having the backing of the board in [an] organisation is an important way of seeing the measures through.

“Those who lead and make the decisions really do need to buy in and be an active part of the process. This allows you to create the culture and ethos for which you are looking.”
