South Cambridgeshire District Council has received menopause-friendly employer accreditation as a result of its supportive environment for all of its employees.
The accreditation, which was created by Henpicked: Menopause In The Workplace, acknowledges organisations that uphold high standards and effective practices to support the menopause in the workplace. An independent panel assesses employers based on whether they demonstrate the correct menopause awareness, guidance and support for their employees.
South Cambridgeshire District Council was recognised due to its menopause policy, guides and toolkits, and the establishment of its menopause cafes. It has also raised awareness of menopause in the workplace, and made adjustments and support available to staff.
Councillor Bridget Smith, leader of South Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “The council strives to be an inclusive and supportive workplace, and has worked to reflect this. As a modern and caring council, we recognise the importance of creating a supportive environment for everyone at all stages of life. Being menopause-friendly is about fostering a workplace culture where everyone feels understood, respected, and empowered. We want to lead by example and ensure our employees know that we are here to support them through every stage of their careers, including times when they may need additional support and understanding.”
Deborah Garlick, chief executive officer and founder of Henpicked: Menopause In The Workplace, said: “South Cambridgeshire District Council balances its provision of comprehensive resources with regular in-person sessions where conversations can be had and personalised support offered. I’m always greatly encouraged by public sector organisations achieving the menopause-friendly accreditation as experience tells us the learnings, experience and empathy cascade from the workplace into the communities they serve. Not to mention the fact they’re setting a fine example to all their stakeholder organisations, many of whom will choose to take action themselves.”
