Breaking the taboo around menopause in the workplace is crucial for creating an inclusive environment where all employees can thrive.
Employers play a vital role in fostering a culture of openness, particularly when addressing health issues like menopause, which not only affects those experiencing it, but the people around them which offer support.
At Sodexo, our commitment to inclusivity is demonstrated by our menopause-friendly accreditation, awarded for our efforts in supporting employees through this stage of their life.
Our approach goes beyond raising awareness; menopause support is embedded in our wider gender equity strategy. Recognising that many employees consider leaving their jobs due to menopause symptoms, and some do, we have made it a priority to create a supportive environment. This helps retain valuable talent and enhances the wellbeing of employees who might otherwise struggle in silence.
We have cultivated a supportive culture through initiatives like virtual menopause cafés, where employees openly discuss their experiences, hear insights from menopause specialists, and explore connections between menopause and other health conditions such as endometriosis. These cafés have been extended to in-person sessions for front-line colleagues, offering a space to connect and engage in open conversations.
Our internal communication channels provide a wealth of resources to support these discussions, while feedback from the cafés and input from our menopause working group have helped refine our approach to menopause support.
We are also committed to empowering managers to think innovatively and provide adjustments where needed, including for those experiencing menopause.
Our menopause guidance, in place for several years, was recently enhanced with tailored resources for managers and employees, offering practical support and advice.
With accessible educational content and proactive engagement through employee networks, we hope to set a strong example of how employers can lead the way in breaking the menopause taboo and building a more inclusive workplace for all.
