Manufacturing organisation Bradbury Group opened an on-site gym for 162 staff based at its headquarters in Scunthorpe in June 2019, and has since seen 70 employees use the facilities, amounting to an uptake rate of 43% within the first two months of operation.
The on-site gym was built to help boost employees’ physical and mental health, as well as to give staff the opportunity to socialise with peers outside of their usual working environments.
The organisation invested £150,000 in creating the new gym, which features a large free-weight area, full cardio section, strength training machines and a stretching and kettlebell area, complete with high-impact rubber flooring. The gym also offers facilities such as a filtered water dispenser, changing rooms, lockers, showers and access to a Bluetooth audio system.
Bradbury Group employees based at Scunthorpe have exclusive use of the gym facilities, which cost an annual induction fee of £15.
Staff were enlisted to name the new gym, via a competition. The chosen name is Made 2 Motivate, a reflection of the organisation’s Made to Measure range of steel doors.
Development of the gym started in January 2019, when Bradbury Group moved into new premises in Scunthorpe. Employees were kept abreast of progress at monthly catch-up sessions, and the opening was communicated to staff via posters, leaflets, emails and the organisation’s private Facebook group for employees.
Tim Strawson, managing director at Bradbury Group, said: “We are always looking for ways to improve the facilities for our staff. When gauging interest in a potential gym, more than 50% of employees said they would use the facility. We had the space and the resources to provide a gym, and felt that this would benefit our staff.
“I recognise that being fit promotes better health, including mental health, and allows employees to bond from different areas of the business. I’m pleased to see that this investment has already been worthwhile.”
