Luxury car manufacturer Bentley Motors, energy provider E.On and consumer goods organisation Unilever have been named among the best places to work for UK shift-based employees for 2023, according to ratings published by community job platform Breakroom.

Breakroom’s Best and Worst Places to Work in 2023 used reviews from its community of more than 430,000 shift-based staff in order to create its rankings.

Elderly and disability care provider Comfort Call, coffeehouse and restaurant chain Tim Horton’s, and lingerie retailer Victoria’s Secret were featured on the list of worst places to work, according to staff.

The ratings were based on hourly employees’ voluntary answers to a questionnaire, which asked for their insights into the job, pay, benefits, shifts and management over the past year. For employers which received a minimum of 30 reviews, the information was then aggregated into a rating out of 10.

Air traffic management provider NATS was rated the best employer in the UK, with a rating of 9.1, while manufacturer BAE Systems (8.9) and Unilever (8.9) were next on the list.

Broken down by sector, the top employers in hospitality included restaurant chains Five Guys, Nando’s and Prezzo, while in retail the top 10 included John Lewis and Partners, Ikea and Lush.

The top 10 best places to work were:

  • NATS
  • BAE Systems
  • Unilever
  • Hitachi
  • RSA Insurance
  • TransPennine Express
  • Bentley Motors
  • Cummins
  • Greater Anglia
  • South Western Railway
  • Hastings Direct

Anna Maybank, co-founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of Breakroom, said: “Our [community’s] list of the best and worst-rated employers highlights which employers are listening to employees and meeting their needs and the employers that need to improve.

“With more job competition for staff in the key sectors of retail, hospitality, logistics and social care than ever before[…]employers must work harder to stand out. The next generation of job seekers are not just comparing pay and hours but looking at a range of factors including perks like free meals on shifts, staff discounts and reward programmes.”
