Half (50%) of UK employers already use an online benefits platform, according to research by global professional services firm Aon.
Its UK benefits and trends survey 2025, which surveyed 240 UK professionals in human resources, reward, compensation and benefits roles, also found that 21% of respondents planned to implement an online benefits platform within the next three years, while 19% had no plans to introduce one and 10% said they provided benefits flexibility without using a platform.
Just under three-quarters (71%) of respondents recognised the need to adapt benefits strategies to meet the needs of multiple generations and expect to change benefits for future generations.
Furthermore, 89% reported a shift in employee expectations, with work-life balance (90%) and flexible-working hours (87%) remaining top priorities. Three-quarters (74%) cited better awareness and handling of mental health issues as a priority.
Meanwhile, focus on diversity, equity and inclusion and environmental, social and governance issues has declined since the last survey in 2022, with 56% and 41% identifying these as priorities respectively.
There has also been a change in the priorities for offering online benefits since 2022, with recruiting new talent and cost management taking precedence over employee retention.
Terry Gostelow, principal strategy consultant in health and benefits at Aon, said: “UK employers are recognising that they need to review their strategies and be innovative if they are to remain competitive in retaining present employees and attracting future ones. Employers are increasingly aware of the changing expectations of employees, particularly regarding the need for a digital employee experience, personalised benefits and flexibility across work practices.
“The data suggests that employers are identifying that they have to evolve their benefit offerings to cater to a diverse and multi-generational talent pool and that technology offers them the opportunity to do so. Employees’ expectations have changed and while in the past it might have been more complex to address their needs, now, by leveraging data and analytics, strategic investment, and integrated solutions, employers can effectively attract, retain, and empower their entire workforce.”
