advertised salaries rise

Advertised salaries have risen year-on-year for the first time in six months, showing a 3.9% increase in October 2018 when compared with the corresponding 2017 figures, according to the latest monthly report from job search engine Adzuna.

Andrew Hunter, co-founder of Adzuna, said: "It's hopeful that real wages are on the way back up after months of decline. While overall salaries are up 3.9% year-on-year, we had expected to see more robust growth, but have our fingers crossed that this will be a springboard to build upon as we move into 2019."

Teaching tops the list of the best-performing job sectors by salary, with advertised pay increasing by 15% year-on-year, followed by the creative and design industry (8%), administration (7%), the legal industry (6.6%) and hospitality and catering (4.4%).

Hunter said: "It's pleasing to see tireless bar staff and waitresses receiving a jolly bump to their wages, just in time for the busy period. Hopefully, this will be some consolation for all the terrible jokes and loud behaviour acted out at Christmas work dos up and down the country over the next few weeks."

At the other end of the scale, jobs in the domestic and cleaning sector have seen the biggest year-on-year salary drop, at 7.2%, followed by graduate jobs (4%), scientific roles (3.9%), the retail industry (1.6%) and maintenance (1.6%).
