Barnsley Council has received a breastfeeding-friendly employer certificate as part of its commitment to supporting employees returning to work after maternity leave.
The breastfeeding-friendly employer scheme, led by the council’s Public Health team, aims to encourage and support staff to continue their breastfeeding experience by fostering a breastfeeding-friendly environment when returning to work following maternity leave.
Barnsley Council achieved the certificate due to the actions and initiatives it has implemented to engage, recognise and embrace the value of breastfeeding employees. These include developing a maternity policy that encourages managers to engage with employees as part of their return to work from maternity leave, and introducing a flexible approach to working hours.
It has also introduced a private breastfeeding room with a space for breastfeeding parents returning to work, equipped with a fridge for expressed milk, and has promoted work-life balance.
The aim of the scheme is to reduce staff turnover and retention of workers, increase job satisfaction, morale and staff loyalty, and enhance the council’s corporate image by demonstrating compassion and investment in staff health and wellbeing.
Councillor Wendy Cain, cabinet spokesperson for Public Health and Communities, said: “After our survey, we listened to our communities. The whole process of creating this initiative took time and input from a range of services. We’re proud to receive the recognition for our support for our employees.”
Councillor Robert Frost, cabinet spokesperson for Core Services, added: “As an employer, we recognise the value of creating an inclusive and supportive workplace for all employees. By fostering a breastfeeding-friendly environment, we not only promote the wellbeing of our staff but also contribute to the public health of future generations, as breastfeeding provides the best possible start in life. These initiatives reflect our commitment to investing in the health and happiness of our workforce, which, ultimately, strengthens our organisation.”
