The Home Office has introduced a new childcare plan after staff voiced concerns that previous arrangements were unfair.

Last month, it brought in childcare vouchers for all core Home Office employees. It is also piloting the scheme in the Prison Service and the Immigration and Nationality Directorate.

John Marsh, group HR director at the government organisation, said that it introduced the new arrangement because only a very small number of staff had the benefit of a workplace nursery or playscheme place and the majority of staff received no help at all.

The public sector department, which employs over 70,000 workers, had originally planned to build another nursery at its London headquarters but instead decided to launch the tax and National Insurance-free vouchers, provided through Accor, as it would be a benefit to all employees, not just those based in the capital.
