Something for the weekend: We all have an idea about what would constitute an odd job, but it is a whole different definition down under.
Tourism Tasmania has launched its Odd Jobs initiative as part of its off season campaign this year to encourage Australians and holiday makers to sign up for volunteering opportunities in some of the island’s most unusual workplaces.
It collaborated with a variety of tourism operators across the state when deciding on the 10 odd jobs, which include Wombat Walker, Oyster Organiser, Sauna Stoker, Wine Whisperer, Paranormal Investigator, Cave Conductor, Truffle Snuffler, Star Seeker, Puffer Nut and Soaksmith.
The selected Wombat Walker at East Coast Natureworld will help maintain the physical and mental wellbeing of wombats through morning excursions, while the lucky Puffer Nut will join the locomotive crew on the Lynchford Express on the West Coast Wilderness Railway.
Successful applicants will have their travel expenses covered and receive a selection of Tasmanian produce or goods from their Odd Job host as a reward. Applications are open until 8 July via the Discover Tasmania website.
Vanessa Pinto, acting chief executive officer at Tourism Tasmania, said: “For many holiday goers, Tasmanian winters offer the perfect opportunity to escape the stress and routine of everyday life and enjoy a unique experience. These Odd Job volunteering experiences are fun, light-hearted opportunities that respond to issues of work-life balance and burnout that many Australians are feeling.
“We know this is effective because it creates conversations about the importance of taking a break this winter, and building awareness that Tasmania’s off season is the perfect space to do that. We know this winter will be challenging for some tourism and hospitality operators, which is why it’s important to continue investing in winter marketing initiatives to drive visitors to the state and support our regions during the quieter months.”
