Something for the weekend: A beekeeper employed by retail giant Amazon in Dunfermline, Scotland, has introduced beehives to its fulfilment centre team.

Ross Main, who is an inbound support specialist, worked alongside the Amazon sustainability team to set up and keep bees at the fulfilment centre. He took over his late grandad’s bee site in Dunbar 10 years ago and has since placed bees across several locations in the north east of Scotland.

Main registered as a sole trader to produce honey in 2021 and through his business, Main’s Apiaries, sells locally produced honey at markets and provides family-friendly beekeeping experiences.

A total of four beehives have now been placed outside of Amazon’s Dunfermline site, allowing Amazon employees to be able to get up close and personal with the bees and learn about the process of honey production.

The aim of the initiative is to help maintain a healthy balance within the local ecosystem by pollinating plants and aiding in the overall sustainability of the surrounding environment.

Jamie Strain, general manager at Amazon in Dunfermline, said: “Ross is a great asset to the team at Amazon in Dunfermline, and we want to say thank you for the beehives and for educating us on how to keep bees. The work Ross has done for the community is very beneficial to the ecosystem and we couldn’t be prouder of his efforts.”

Other community initiatives Amazon that supports include delivering free computer science and STEM education programmes to UK students through Amazon Future Engineer, transporting meals and other essentials to families in need through its pro bono logistics programme Amazon Local Good, and providing more than 200,000 families experiencing poverty with surplus essential goods through its Multibank initiative.

This sounds like a wonderful initiative to us at Employee Benefits and would definitely benefit employee wellbeing!
