Long-distance train service operator CrossCountry has appointed Wendy Smith as its new HR and safety director, set to join the business in the early summer.
With full responsibility for the organisation's HR strategy, Smith will play a central role in shaping the future of CrossCountry so that the business is sustainable in the long-term. She has a strong interest in employee engagement, developing individuals and a track record of supporting businesses to improve growth and performance.
She joins from HS2, where she was head of HR and responsible for developing its future capability. Prior to that, Smith held numerous senior HR positions in a variety of industries, including construction, media, and logistics, and has significant experience of unionised environments.
Smith said: “Like many sectors, the rail industry is undergoing significant change due to the impact of the pandemic. I am looking forward to working with Tom [Joyner] and the wider CrossCountry team to ensure our business thrives and colleagues are equipped to not only meet but exceed customers’ expectations.”
Tom Joyner, managing director at CrossCountry, added: “Wendy brings significant operational and strategic experience to CrossCountry, which will be vital as we evolve to meet existing and future customer demands. Her strong experience in supporting business through periods of change will be invaluable so that we emerge from the throes of the pandemic as a viable business.”
