Auto-enrolment will trigger wider reviews of employee benefits among small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), according to research by MetLife UK.

The study, which questioned 500 HR directors from SMEs employing fewer than 250 employees, found 51% of respondents will either definitely or probably review the benefits they offer ahead of auto-enrolling staff.

The research also found:

  • 36% of respondents are making plans for the introduction of auto-enrolment.
  • 14% of respondents are unaware of their auto-enrolment duties.
  • 18% of respondents are only vaguely aware of their auto-enrolment duties.
  • 32% of respondents are aware of auto-enrolment, but have made no plans towards complying with the legislation.

Tom Gaynor (pictured), employee benefits sales director at MetLife UK, said: “The introduction of auto-enrolment will be a springboard for SMEs to review their employee benefits packages and it is clear many will take the opportunity.”
