Sports Direct is facing a claim from nearly 300 employees that were not eligible to participate in its bonus scheme because they were on zero-hours contracts.

The employees were excluded from the retail organisation’s bonus arrangements, which paid out some £160 million worth of shares to 2,000 permanent employees.

In April 2013, the scheme paid out more than £100 million to 2,000 employees.

Law firm Leigh Day, which is acting for the affected staff, has confirmed it sent letters to Sports Direct’s legal team on 30 January claiming compensation for missed bonuses for a group of 30 employees.

Claims have also been gathered in partnership with workers rights group Pay Justice.

On receiving the claim letters, the organisation is required to provide a response.

Sports Direct declined to comment.
