Health workers at Homerton NHS Trust have won a pay increase and back pay deal following a union campaign.

The deal, backed by trade union Unison, has secured hundreds of clinical support workers a “substantial” pay rise. The workers will also receive more than three year’s back pay.

The clinical support workers, which includes healthcare assistants, maternity care assistants and rehabilitation assistants, had been paid at band 2 of the NHS Agenda for Change pay scale, but had been regularly performing clinical tasks that should be on the higher band 3 rate, according to Unison.

The staff at Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust had campaigned for months to receive fair pay, and to receive pay for the extra work they had already done.

The workers have been moved to band 3 and have received three years five months’ worth of backpay.

The pay deal supports Unison’s national Pay fair for patient care campaign which aims to ensure all band 2 staff with increased responsibilities are paid at the correct rate and compensated for band 3 work already carried out.

Sara Gorton, Unison London regional secretary, said: “This deal is a major step toward recognising, respecting and fairly rewarding the vital roles played by clinical support workers.

“It’s a hard-won victory. Their determination and persistence have finally paid off. They truly deserve this substantial wage rise.”

Jordan Rivera, Unison Homerton branch secretary said: “This victory is long overdue. These dedicated health workers have been going above and beyond for years, taking on clinical duties without proper recognition or pay.

“Their campaigning means they’ve now secured both.”
