Around 50 engineering, maintenance, and fire, health and safety workers employed by Harrods have won union recognition regarding their pay and working conditions.

The employees at the luxury London department store will now be formally represented by Unite, having sought formal recognition for several months. The agreement will enable collective bargaining on their pay and working conditions.

Security guards and cleaners employed by Harrods previously secured formal recognition. Unite has around 400 members at Harrods in almost every department. It is currently working to get all of these members under a union recognition agreement.

Sharon Graham, general secretary at Unite, said: “This is an excellent win for our members at Harrods, who have been seeking recognition for many months. We are delighted to have formal recognition for more members and look forward to working with the employer to secure better pay and conditions for workers.”

Keith Henderson, regional officer at Unite, added: “The union will now focus on working with Harrods to create a comprehensive formal recognition agreement. This will allow more staff at Harrods to improve their pay and conditions for themselves and their colleagues and is an important step closer to achieving recognition for all Unite members at the department store.”
