Delivery workers for the Greene King brewery have accepted an improved pay deal following industrial action this week.
Around 30 members of trade union Unite, who are employed by logistics firm GXO on an outsourced contract, took part in industrial action over the course of six days. The workers involved in the strike were heavy goods vehicle drivers, drivers’ mates and warehouse staff based at the GXO's Runcorn factory.
The workers announced last month that they planned to strike on 23 November for 24 hours, as well as on 30 November to 1 December and between 6 and 8 December.
Following the strike action, which was a result of a previous offer of a 4% pay rise, GXO agreed to raise the worker’s pay by between 8-9.4% backdated to July 2023, as well as a further 6% increase in April 2024. Unite members voted unanimously to accept the latest pay offer.
A Greene King spokesperson said: “We’re pleased that GXO and Unite have reached a solution and we look forward to continuing to deliver a great Christmas for customers in our pubs.”
Sharon Graham, general secretary at Unite, added: “This is an excellent victory for the workers in GXO’s Runcorn factory who deliver for Greene King, which was made possible by workers acting in unity and being prepared to take strike action. This victory shows yet again the power of a union and the winning mentality of Unite.”
