Engineering group British Engines has enhanced maternity pay as part of its commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace environment and attracting more women into engineering.
The group, which employs 1,200 employees across eight businesses in north east England, will now offer maternity leave with full pay for the first 16 weeks, 75% of pay for the following six weeks and 50% of pay for the next 12 weeks. This is more than the legal requirement, under which employers must pay a weekly rate equal to 90% of an employee's average weekly earnings for six weeks.
British Engines designed the enhanced maternity pay package to provide greater financial security and flexibility for expectant mothers and their families during an important stage in their lives.
Wendy Tatters, director of HR at the British Engines Group, said: “I am thrilled to announce the increase in our maternity pay policy. Our commitment to supporting parents during maternity is closely tied to our broader mission of attracting more women into engineering. We recognise that diversity is a key driver of innovation and we actively work to encourage and empower women to pursue careers in engineering. Our improved maternity policy is just one of the many steps we are taking to create a welcoming and supportive environment for female engineers.”
Richard Dodd, chief executive officer at the British Engines Group, added: “We are committed to creating an environment where every employee’s health, happiness and personal development are paramount. Our commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace extends beyond just maternity pay. We believe in nurturing talent and creating an environment where all our employees can thrive.”
As well as offering part-time arrangements and remote working for mothers transitioning back to work, British Engines launched an upgraded employee assistance programme for its employees following a wellbeing survey last year. It also provides a range of confidential health and wellbeing support for staff and their families.
