Line managers should be held accountable for disappointing engagement levels among their staff and should even be denied pay rises.

This is according to Martyn Phillips, HR director at B&Q, speaking on Wednesday on the topic of Getting Engaged at the CIPD conference in Harrogate. B&Q uses an HR success model to ensure that its HR function is credible and that the company leaders - from line managers to chief executives – effectively engage their teams.
Leaders are scored on their employees’ levels of engagement and these scores are published on the company intranet. If they fail to hit targets, action is taken from extra management training to, in extreme cases, being moved into a new non-management role. “We insist on accountability [and] don’t allow people to make excuses. You simply can’t win without engaged talent,” said Phillips.
