Employers have been reminded to consider the culture of their company in order to properly engage their staff.
Speaking at at the HR Show in Manchester, Debra Corey, former director of compensation and benefits at Honeywell, told delegates to think about the behaviours and beliefs of their workforce in order to devise a reward strategy to fully engage them.
In a session entitled Using reward as a tool to engage and retain staff, Corey said: "Employers have to think about what's really going on with their staff in order to put the best reward programme in place."
She advised employers to open their minds and to take change by the hand.
Corey explained that the type of company and role of the employee was important in devising reward strategies. For example, she said retail staff would be motivated and engaged by voluntary benefits while senior management would be more concerned about pensions.
Corey also emphasised that employers should be mindful of what they want to achieve from their reward strategy. "You need to remember what you are trying to accomplish, what you want to say to your staff and try to come up with ways to save money," she said.
