Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has introduced a green reward programme to engage its 14,500 employees with environmental sustainability and wellbeing across all hospitals. The Shine Rewards programme, provided by sustainability and wellbeing engagement provider Jump, is aimed at motivating staff to make behavioural changes to help the trust achieve its net-zero goals.
Employees can earn points by taking part in activities that boost sustainability and wellbeing. Those who earn the most points each month will be awarded a voucher of their choice, and a charity donation will be offered to the winning team every six months. The activities that enable staff to win points include growing their own plants, staying active, taking care of their mental health and maintaining positive behaviours while working.
Through an Impact Dashboard, employees can track their individual progress such as carbon emissions avoided, miles of active travel recorded or bathtubs of water saved from going meat-free. Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust joins Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and Great Ormond Street Hospital that have previously participated in the Jump programme. Amy Johnston, sustainability officer at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Shine Rewards brings together sustainability and wellbeing in an engaging and fun way, that we feel will help to bring our people together during these more uncertain times.“We are rewarding employees for taking a whole range of actions that will help us reduce our environmental impact, and as one of the largest NHS Trusts in the UK we are working to lead the way in delivering sustainable healthcare.”
