East Belfast Enterprise has been accredited as a living wage employer by the Living Wage Foundation.

As a result of the recognition, all of East Belfast Enterprise’s employees, as well as its regular third-party contracted staff, will now receive at least the real living wage, which is currently set at £12.60 across the UK. This is higher than the government’s minimum wage for those aged 21 and above, which stands at £12.21 per hour.

The real living wage rate is independently calculated to reflect the real cost of living. Updated annually, it is backed by the principle that a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay.

East Belfast Enterprise made the decision to introduce the rate as part of its commitment to fairness, dignity, and putting its people first. Gaining living wage employer status aligns with its mission to create inclusive, supportive spaces for its tenants and people behind the businesses. It hopes its decision inspires other Northern Irish employers to consider living wage accreditation.

Jonathan McAlpin, chief executive of East Belfast Enterprise, said: “This accreditation as a living wage employer isn’t just about a payslip, it’s about respect and putting people at the heart of everything we achieve. At East Belfast Enterprise, we value our people deeply and encourage them to thrive professionally and personally. Paying the real living wage is a practical and powerful way to show our commitment to our team.

“When an organisation pays staff fairly, it improves staff morale, retention, and motivation. It uplifts families, strengthens businesses, and contributes to a healthier and more resilient community. We hope our accreditation sends a clear message to our community and peers that fair pay matters. We encourage other employers to consider the long-term benefits of paying the real living wage.”
