US communications, media and automotive services firm Cox Enterprises has donated a total of $200,000 to two charities as part of its employee health and wellbeing programme.
The donation was made to two charities focusing on cancer awareness and support, The Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta Affiliate and the Movember Foundation, in order to mark World Cancer Day (4 February).
Cox Enterprises donated $5 to the charities on behalf of each of the 20,000 employees that participated in its ‘Know your numbers’ (KYN) health screening campaign, which provides actionable employee data through free annual screenings.
The organisation’s health and wellness programme also includes personal coaching, weight loss and smoking cessation initiatives for staff.
Cox Enterprises, which employs 55,000 staff, hosted more than 200 events to raise awareness about the power of early detection in the fight against cancer, as well as providing self-awareness guides and tips for staff about how to take advantage of the preventative care benefits available to them.
As part of the campaign, employees shared their experiences with cancer, adopting healthy lifestyles and losing weight. Cox Enterprises’ chairman, Jim Kennedy, also shared his personal story about overcoming an aggressive form of prostate cancer.
The KYN programme also aims to help employees understand their financial health. A personal readiness statement is available to eligible employees, which shows if they are on track to meet their retirement savings goals.
Marybeth Leamer, executive vice president of human resources and administration at Cox Enterprises, said: “Our employees have always been our number one resource. I'm particularly excited that we were able raise awareness about early [cancer] detection, while also helping fund Susan G. Komen and the Movember Foundation's life-saving cancer research.
“The ‘Know your numbers’ programme is designed to help our employees understand and improve their physical and financial health.”
