Employee engagement is integral to the effective management of a transformational business change.

Kathie Miller (pictured), senior vice president of global learning at Nielsen, will lead a session called Engaging a changing workforce at Employee Benefits Connect in New York on March 25, 2014.

She will share her own experience, over the past years, during which the global information and measurement company went through dramatic change on a number of levels, including new leadership, private equity owners, marketplace shifts, and the move from a public to a private and back to a public company again.

Miller said: “The pace of change is accelerating, the world is becoming flatter, and people and organizations must learn to adapt and change in order to survive and thrive.

“Key to the success of our transformational change efforts was a strategic focus on employee engagement.”

At Nielsen, the executive team first made employee engagement a top strategic imperative, she explained.

The organisation then tapped into its core capabilities, which are statistics and measurement, added a dose of communications, and engaged employees globally.

Miller added: “Focusing on both ‘high tech’ and ‘high touch’, we applied technology in new ways to connect a global, mobile workforce while helping employees make connections between our business and the greater good.

“Add to this an increasing focus on building a learning organization, where every employee has an opportunity to develop to their full potential, and you have a formula for success.”

The session will answer a range of questions, including:

  • How can employers implement a strong statistical foundation to identify the unique engagement needs of their employees and fuel ongoing positive change?
  • How are traditional approaches to engaging employees changing in order to meet the needs of a globally diverse, mobile and digital-savvy workforce?
  • How can employers leverage technology and social media to strengthen organizational culture, build trust and empower employees to take charge of their careers?

Building a strong culture of engagement is a process,” added Miller. “Many companies, including Nielsen, have created ‘playbooks’ to drive measurable results. We’ll discuss a number of practical examples and tools in my session.

“An engaged workforce fuels innovation, client excellence, and bottom-line growth by creating an environment where employees and organizations excel.”

Employee Benefits Connect will be held at the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York on March 25, 2014.
