Unilever UK Home and Personal Care gave its factory workers time off work to fill out its staff survey. And as 100% of its 630 Leeds-based staff took part, the consumer goods firm donated £4,000 to charity. The firm, which owns the brands Dove, Lynx and Persil, promised that if 85% of employees responded to the survey, which asked staff what they thought of their working environment, it would donate the cash to charity.

Staff nominated Jimmy's Renal Unit in Leeds, in memory of their late colleague Drew Easton, who had been a kidney patient on the ward. Tracey Wilson, the employee development coach who headed up the survey, said: "Unfortunately in September one of our colleagues passed away. It was just appropriate that everyone pulled all the stops out to get the £4,000." Wilson added: "Everyone was fantastic - we were going through quite a lot of major change at the time and, even though morale was a bit low, people still participated."
