The real-time information (RTI) pilot is to expand between 6 November 2012 and 31 March 2013 with the addition of 250,000 employers.

The pilot was launched in April 2012 with 10 employers reporting pay-as-you-earn (PAYE) information in real time to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

Ruth Owen, director general, personal tax at HMRC, said: “The pilot continues to go very well and remains on track. We started with just 10 employers and now have more than 1,800 PAYE schemes successfully submitting PAYE returns in real time with more than 1.97 million individual records.

“With a wide range of employers in the pilot, including micro businesses and [small and medium-sized enterprises] SMEs,using commercial software, payroll services and HMRC’s basic PAYE tools, we are confident that the system will work smoothly.”

Owen added that it is important employers that are not in the pilot begin preparing now for the start of RTI in April 2013 by checking that software and employee data is up to date.
