Police staff and community support officers (PCSOs) across England and Wales are to receive a total 2% pay increase.
The pay award for PCSOs and police staff, which has been agreed by the Police Staff Council, will provide an additional 1% pay rise on top of a planned 1% pay increase.
The original pay award was designed to align with the public sector pay cap for pay rises, however, the 2% increase will ensure that PCSOs and police staff receive the same pay settlement as police officers. Police officers across England and Wales received a 2% pay increase effective from 1 September 2017, as recommended by the Police Remuneration Review Body’s (PRRB) Third report: England and Wales 2017.
David Jamieson, West Midlands police and crime commissioner, announced the additional pay increase for 3,758 police staff and PCSOs in his jurisdiction prior to the final Police Staff Council confirmation.
Jamieson said: “I am glad that the Police Staff Council has listened to me with this announcement. Just like officers, staff and PCSOs play a hugely important role in keeping us safe and deserve the same treatment. It was the right thing to do. I am [pleased] the Police Staff Council has followed the West Midlands’ lead.
“Emergency call handlers make life-and-death decisions. In the West Midlands, we most certainly recognise the contribution all our staff make to keeping us safe. I am pleased that, nationally, staff and PCSOs are receiving that recognition too. That is why I announced that, regardless of the Police Staff Council decision, in West Midlands Police, all police officers, PCSOs and police staff would receive the same.
“I regret this announcement doesn’t mean pay will rise in line with inflation for staff, PCSOs and officers. I hope by the time of the Budget, the government will have put funding in place to top up this increase to match inflation.”
