Richard Harrington has been named parliamentary under secretary of state at the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
Although it differs in name, the role will cover the duties previously performed by the minister of state for pensions.
Baroness Ros Altmann served as minister of state for pensions between 2015 and 2016, succeeding Steve Webb who took up the post in 2010.
Altmann left the post of pensions minister last week as part of a cabinet reshuffle, following the appointment of Theresa May as Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative Party in the wake of David Cameron’s resignation.
Harrington is the MP for Watford. He was previously parliamentary under secretary of state with responsibility for cross-government coordination for the resettlement of Syrian refugees.
Further changes at the DWP include the appointment of Damian Green as secretary of state for work and pensions. Green replaces Stephen Crabb, who took up the post in March 2016.
