The government is set to bring in legislation to introduce mandatory ethnicity and disability pay gap reporting for organisations with more than 250 employees.

It is planned that the measure will be brought in under the draft Equality (Race and Disability) Bill announced in the 2024 King’s Speech at the State opening of Parliament.

The draft bill will enshrine in law the full right to equal pay for ethnic minorities and disabled people, as well as introduce mandatory ethnicity and disability pay reporting.

Currently, most ethnic minority groups earn less than the white British group. Meanwhile, according to the Office for National Statistic, in 2021 there was a median pay gap of 13.8% between disabled employees and non-disabled employees.

Sheeraz Gulsher and Darain Faraz, co-founders of non-profit organisation People Like Us, said: "This government has responded to us and many other organisations calling for this legislation. We have long recognised the systemic biases and disparities faced by people who look like us in the workplace. This law could be a significant step towards holding businesses accountable for how they treat their workers.”
