National Grid has extended its living wage commitment by paying the voluntary rate to its apprentices, interns and graduates.
The gas and electricity utility organisation received its living wage accreditation in September after it committed to paying all employees and third-party contractors the Living Wage Foundation’s recommended rate.
The voluntary rate, which is independently calculated according to the basic cost of living, is currently set at £8.25 and hour, and £9.40 in London.
A spokesperson at National Grid said: "At National Grid, apprentices, interns and graduates are included in our commitment to pay those who work on our behalf the living wage. It is the right thing to do and, owing to our size and scale, we have an opportunity to play a leading role the UK energy sector and we hope that others will follow our lead."
Sarah Vero, director of the Living Wage Foundation, added: “Extending the living wage to apprentices and interns is exactly the kind of leadership that is needed by our best organisations to encourage rich training opportunities and social mobility.”
