Something for the weekend: A Chinese corgi police dog has been docked its end-of-year bonus after some bad behaviour, as seen in a video uploaded to Chinese social media.
Doggy detective Fu Zai, who is 18-months old, joined the Weifang Public Security Bureau in the Shandong province of northern China as a reserve explosives detection dog in January 2024. He was donated to the police dog training base after showing potential. By October, Fu Zai, which means Lucky Boy, had become a fully qualified police dog.
Through the account Corgi Police Dog Fuzai and Its Comrades on the Chinese equivalent of TikTok, Weifang Public Security Bureau posts updates on the training and activities of Fu Zai and the other police dogs.
In a video posted earlier this month, officers praised Fu Zai for his work as an explosives-detection dog throughout 2024, which included completing several security tasks, raising the profile of canine cops in Weifang, and passing the level four police dog assessment.
For his efforts, the video shows him receiving a red flower, gourmet pet treats, a Lunar New Year gift package and toys during an end-of-year performance review.
However, it then shows a police offer confiscating the treats and toys as a playful punishment for sleeping on the job and urinating in his food bowl. Only the red flower was left as a reminder of his achievements.
“But because of your recent behaviour, being fatigued in the workplace and even urinating in your own dog basin, we had to criticise and confiscate your snacks as a penalty. You will keep only the red flower,” the officer explained while confiscating the dog’s snacks and toys. “Hope you make more persistent efforts in the future.”
What a ruff day at the office for Fu Zai! While we at Employee Benefits feel sorry he lost his bonus, we’re sure he’ll work harder throughout 2025 to earn one next year.
