More than 1.6 million eligible employees have been enrolled into an auto-enrolment pension scheme, according to a registration report published by The Pensions Regulator.
Its Automatic-enrolment report, which covers the period between July 2012 and August 2013, also found that an additional 2.5 million employees who work at organisations that have reached their staging date were not eligible for auto-enrolment while nearly 5.9m were already members of a workplace pension scheme.
1 October 2013 marks the first-year anniversary since the introduction of auto-enrolment.
In its report The Pensions Regulator said: “While the information is the actual data received by the regulator, there will be employers that have reached their staging date, that have automatically enrolled their eligible jobholders and that have not yet completed registration.
“The figure for eligible jobholders who have been automatically enrolled is therefore likely to be higher than that shown in this report.”
The Pensions Regulator will publish monthly registration updates on auto-enrolment, derived from information submitted by employers once they have registered with TPR.
