How to deal with cancer in the workplace and support employees will be the focus of a session at Employee Benefits Connect.

Charles Alberts, senior consultant at Lorica Employee Benefits, will lead a session titled Dealing with cancer in the workplace: support and care for staff as patients and carers, alongside Liz Egan, programme manager at Macmillan Cancer Support, at Employee Benefits Connect on 27 February.

Alberts said: “Cancer is going to become a lot more prevalent in the workplace. We want to ensure employers are on the front foot and consider the support that is available to employees.”

The pair will provide advice and guidance about what the issues are and what delegates need to consider when supporting an employee with cancer.

Alberts and Egan will address a range of issues, including:

  • The impact cancer has on a business and the challenges faced by employers.
  • What the future holds and whether it is naïve to turn attention to prevention
  • Current legislation around cancer and the workplace.
  • What resources are available to support HR and line managers.

Egan said: “Line managers find it more emotionally difficult to deal with cancer than [other types of] long-term sickness. They often do not know what to do. It’s important to understand where to, and how to, help an employee.”

Alberts added: “It’s the highest cost in terms of private [medical] treatment. Employers can start to be on the front foot and support is available through employee benefits and initiatives such as smoking cessation.”

Employee Benefits Connect will be held at the Westminster Park Plaza in London on 27 February.
