What do you think is the worst job of 2013? Kitchen porter? No, surely something more dangerous. What about working as a deep sea fisherman, like those featured on television’s the Deadliest Catch? Well, according to a recent survey, the answer is a little more surprising.
Topping the list of US job search website CareerCast.com’s The worst jobs of 2013 is newspaper reporting, which has an average national salary of $36,000 (£27,676)
The recruitment website, which surveyed 200 professions based on five criteria, including physical demands, work environment, income, stress and hiring outlook, stated that newspaper reporting ‘has lost its lustre dramatically over the past five years and is expected to plummet even further by 2020’.
In fact, the trade is in such a state that you’re better off working as an oil rig worker (placed fifth worst) or a lumberjack (placed second worst), two highly dangerous careers.
It’s not all bad news, though. CareerCast.com also published The 200 best jobs of 2013, which means that if you’re an actuary, you should be feeling smug after this was rated the best profession to work in. The role achieved its glod-star rating thanks to its average pay of $91,211 (£58,992) per year, a favourable work environment and low stress levels.
