Employers have been reminded to ensure all elements of their bonus schemes are transparent and clear for all employees.
Speaking at the Human Resources Forum on board The Oriana, Julia Watts, compensations manager at Gallaher told delegates attending the session Why retention is not about people but about managers that bonuses should be based on performance and not service or loyalty to the company.
Watts explained that with issues like age discrimination and equal pay all employees should be treated fairly with regards to bonus schemes, and this should be communicated appropriately by employers.
Watts said: “Employers should consider shifting the focus of bonuses from service and loyalty towards performance and distribute them fairly amongst all staff [dependant on performance].”
