Scania UK, a supplier of vehicles for industrial and marine applications, has enhanced its maternity, paternity and adoption benefits to better support staff who are parents.

According to the business, the policy shows a commitment to its diverse workforce by making sure family welfare comes first. To this end, Scania UK has introduced neonatal leave and pregnancy loss leave packages before they become statutory benefits from 2023.

Employees will be entitled to neonatal leave, which includes one week of additional leave with full pay for every week their child is in the neonatal unit. Pregnancy loss leave gives parents two weeks of leave with full pay.

In addition, staff will now receive 13 weeks at full pay, 13 weeks at half pay and 13 weeks at statutory maternity pay (SMP) during maternity or adoption leave. Previously, a parent would receive 90% of pay for the first six weeks before getting 33 weeks of SMP.

Paternity and parental bereavement leave have both also been enhanced, with parents now receiving two weeks of leave with full pay instead of the current statutory paternity pay.

Clare Booth, director of people and culture at Scania UK, explained that this is an “exciting” step forward and that the team is pleased to have a more contemporary and supportive set of policies that supports employees and their families.

She added: “At Scania, we are one big family. These enhancements will make sure we can better support all the parents who work for Scania UK, and their families. Which is why we have introduced two benefits now for our valued employees, rather than waiting for law to make them statutory.

“We have a diverse business and this new policy will better encompass the needs of all our Scania family members across our nationwide support and service centre network. This is just the first major milestone in Scania UK’s people and culture team’s work to improve and embrace diversity and inclusion across the business."
