The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) has introduced new guidance for effective employee engagement.

The guidance was developed with input from a range of business leaders, employers and employee engagement practitioners. It follows the July 2009 publication of the independent report to government last year, Engaging for Success, which was co-authored by David MacLeod, employee engagement adviser to BIS, and Nita Clarke, director of the IPA.

The initial report was born from government questions about whether employee engagement has something to offer the UK economy and whether it makes a difference to productivity and profitability.

Clarke said: “It is not a one-size-fits-all guide to employee engagement. The guidance will be built on as we learn what works and what does not.”

The package of materials available online include: five guides, containing practical ideas on how to address the key enablers of employee engagement; written and video case studies on exemplars of good practice; downloadable tools and templates that employers can use to put principles into practice; and video testimonies from business leaders on the benefits of employee engagement.
