A former bin man spends his free time travelling hundreds of miles to empty bins at waste tips for free, demonstrating that employee engagement can reach extreme levels.

Steve Jones, who secured his first job as a dustman in 1987, has taken ‘rubbish’ holidays in places as far flung as Malta and Cyprus.

According to the Daily Mail Jones worked every summer for 17 years as an unpaid dustman. Jones, who is now a self-employed gardener, said: "I went out every morning and then did the evening run along the sea front emptying litter bins just for kicks."

The problem with employees who have high levels of engagement is that they may prefer to give up their job and preserve their passion as a hobby, which is what Jones did after being employed as a dustman for only four years.
