Employers are introducing additional perks to help motivate staff working through the busy Christmas period.

Asda is to offer increased discounts and contributions towards a Christmas lunch to all staff who joined the company before 1 September. For the first time, this year, it will publish details of its Festive Thank you scheme on a card, which will be personalised by line managers.

Staff can also take advantage of 20% discounts, with a further 10% off of products on a specified day in the run up to Christmas. The company will also contribute £5 per employee for each store to hold a meal for staff.

Jayne Tory, reward manager, explained: "This is to reward all our colleagues for the hard work that they put in throughout the year and during the busy Christmas period."

Tesco is also offering vouchers to staff which are redeemable in-store. Employees who have joined the retailer since 1 September this year will receive £10, while longer-serving staff will be awarded £20. They will also receive discounts on certain products instore.

Michael Poulton, benefits manager, said: "We always try to offer that little bit extra during the festive period."

NHS Hospitals, meanwhile, will enter Christmas Day workers into a prize draw, with two winners being offered money towards a meal out up to the value of £300.
