Employees at law firm Eversheds took part in several community volunteering events last month to boost motivation.
Some 120 London-based staff helped to decorate a children's sports facility, clean up an adventure playground and run sporting events at a school in Kent for mentally and physically disabled children.They also ran a five-a-side football competition in conjunction with Arsenal Football Club.
The events were organised as part of London Cares day, co-ordinated by charity Business in the Community, when 1,800 employees from 60 London-based organisations took time out to participate in volunteer projects. Anthony Arter, a partner at Eversheds, said the activities were part of the firm's commitment to corporate social responsibility and helped to boost employee motivation.
"It's win-win as we're giving something back to the community as well as it being good for morale. It's a fun day, and gives [junior] staff a chance to manage a project, and manage our senior employees." Staff from Serco Consulting also volunteered their services and spent a day working at a school in Plumstead. Peter Illsley, managing director, said the initiative helped staff to communicate the firm's values.
"We have new people joining all the time, as we're expanding quite quickly, so it helps [develop] our ethos," he said. Other firms that took part included British Gas, Danone UK, John Lewis and London Underground.
